Really. They basically make a slippery slope argument that if you repeal one, what is to stop anyone from repealing all of our rights. Well, for one thing, it is so damned hard to repeal an Amendment to the United States Constitution that it has happened exactly once in our entire history. And that involved prohibition.
If all you have is the Second Amendment, you have nothing. You have no law. You have no rights. You have the right to ‘shoot it out’ over whatever dispute you have and the person with the biggest army gets to rule. How ridiculous an argument can you make that all of the Bill of Rights is dependent on the Second Amendment? If the gun rules, we have no rights. And with the AR-15 as some common weapon, the gun rules.
At least until a Swat Team can get there.
American freedom is dependent on a whole web of beliefs and institutions and built into the very fabric of our society over centuries. Some of it traditions and common law dating back to before the founding of our republic.
Our challenge in the modern era is not to ‘make sure we don’t change anything’. Our challenge is to adapt what is vital to human freedom and progress to new conditions and technologies. Lincoln had the formula for that right.
If A can enslave B, then B can enslave C, and C can enslave A. Equal protection of the laws. Respect for the rights of others and solidarity in the face of any attempt to diminish the rights of another is the protection of your own rights.
Guns are for hunting and self defense. And you don’t need a military grade weapon, or bump stocks, or high capacity ammo cartridges for that.
