GOP Senator: The Free Market Will Decide if We Should Wash Our Hands

Picard and Riker Facepalm

Should service employees be required to wash their hands before serving you a cup of coffee or a cheeseburger?

If Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) had his way, we would do away with cumbersome regulations that require you to wash your hands after taking a leak because the Unwashed Hand of the Free Market will take care of it.

“I was having a discussion with someone, and we were at a Starbucks in my district, and we were talking about certain regulations where I felt like ‘maybe you should allow businesses to opt out,’” he said, “as long as they indicate through proper disclosure, through advertising, through employment literature, or whatever else.” [...]

‘I don’t have any problem with Starbucks if they choose to opt out of this policy as long as they post a sign that says “We don’t require our employees to wash their hands after leaving the restroom,”’” he recalled, as the audience chuckled. “The market will take care of that.’”

The market will take care of that unless, you know, it doesn't.

Republicans are against regulations that require you to wash your hands or vaccinate your children or any number of the other things that you or I may consider to be routine or standard fare for any sufficiently advanced civilization, but when it comes to abortion there is no regulation they will not pass.
