House Republicans Have a Terrible New Immigration Bill, But it Doesn’t Even Matter

Written by SK Ashby

House Republicans have released a "compromise" immigration proposal that moderate lawmakers have been calling for, but it doesn't matter.

It doesn't matter because, although the "compromise" proposal includes more provisions for anti-immigration hardliners than it does moderates, Trump said this morning that he won't sign it.

President Donald Trump said Friday he “certainly won’t sign the more moderate” of two immigration bills going before the House next week ― even though it’s right out of his playbook.

The president shot down the “compromise” proposal a day after House Republicans began to circulate a draft immigration bill that would give some protections to young undocumented immigrants in exchange for a massive increase in border security spending and a large-scale rollback of protections for asylum seekers and unaccompanied child migrants.

The so-called compromise would codify the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program into law, which is good, but it would also limit legal immigration, fully fund Trump's border wall, and would not explicitly prevent Trump from separating children from their parents at the border.

It's a shitty bill but it doesn't matter because Trump won't sign it anyway.

Trump won't accept anything short of full white supremacy. White supremacy-lite isn't good enough for him.

House Republicans probably won't be able to pass either of the two immigration bills they intend to vote on and, even if they were able to pass either bill, it's highly unlikely either of them could pass through the Senate. It's also possible House Republicans won't even hold a vote now.
