Election 2020

It’s Happening

I'm sure this is the good news we all needed today!

Democratic Senate candidate Raphael Warnock has defeated the ghoulish Kelly Loeffler while Jon Ossoff appears to have defeated the cartoonishly corrupt Senator David Perdue.

The best part is that it looks like Warnock's and Ossoff's leads will grow beyond the threshold for a recount once all the votes are counted.

With 98% of the vote counted, Warnock was ahead of Loeffler by 1.2 percentage points, roughly 54,000 votes, according to Edison Research. Ossoff led Perdue by more than 17,000 votes, just shy of a 0.5 percent threshold to avoid a recount. Most outstanding votes were from Democratic-leaning areas.

Winning both contests would give Democrats control of the Senate, creating a 50-50 split and giving Vice President-elect Kamala Harris the tie-breaking vote once she and Biden take office on Jan. 20. The party already has a narrow majority in the U.S. House of Representatives.

It's no stretch to say that removing Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell from power will be almost as consequential, if not even more so, than removing Trump from power.

McConnell styled himself as the "grim reaper" of legislation because he has sat on or filibustered literally hundreds of bills supported by Democrats, but he also compromised the integrity of the Senate by refusing to hold a vote on President Obama's Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland. McConnell also jammed through the confirmation of hundreds of lower court judges while never lifting a finger to pass coronavirus stimulus or virtually anything else to speak of. McConnell has been the reason we can't have nice things for even longer than Trump.

There will be plenty of opportunities to be a sober party pooper in the coming months, but I want to point out that even if Democrats control the Senate it will still be difficult to pass certain legislation with no room to lose even a single vote. This will give considerably more negotiating power to each individual senator if leaders can't afford to lose any of them. But you know what? I think that's fine. Compromise is better than nothing and nothing is all that McConnell ever gave the United States.

Democrats will gain control of all the investigative committees so the days of Benghazi and Black Market Fetuses will be truly behind us for the first time since McConnell took control following the 2014 midterm election.
