This is Kentucky we’re talking about. McConnell is likely far more worried about being overtaken by his own party than by the D’s; this is just going to make him MORE intractable and confrontational. He was all by certain to lose, but then the republicans nominated a candidate so crazy she made the Chicken Lady look sane.
