My theory is that they’ve been pounding the pseudo-libertarian + radical religious right rhetoric since Reagan first made his play for the presidency in 1976. Thirty-six years later, the old guard has faded away, but there’s now an entire generation of republicans who actually believe the bullshit. Today’s republican party doesn’t belong to the Bob Dole’s or the George H. W. Bush’s any more. It belongs to the Michele Bachmann’s, the Allen West’s, and the Paul Ryan’s.

This is what it looks like when you have nothing but demagoguery to run on.

That’s all they’ve had to run on for, hell, coupla decades at least.
