Obama’s Fault

Written by SK Ashby

Will Republicans vote to ban so-called "bump stocks" which convert a semi-automatic weapon into a fully-automatic weapon?

It seems unlikely. Several Republicans have hinted that they would consider banning the devices or at least hold hearings on a possible ban, but that's a far cry from actually voting to ban them. It's difficult to imagine a ban on bump-stocks surviving a Republican filibuster if a vote ever happens at all.

But in any event, Republicans would like you to know this is all Obama's fault.

When asked Thursday morning on CNN about the potential for gun control legislation to move forward, White House adviser Kellyanne Conway mentioned twice that bump stocks had been approved by the ATF under the Obama administration.

Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), who said Wednesday he was open to reviewing bump stocks, also noted the ATF’s 2010 decision in a tweet Thursday morning.

In 2010, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) concluded that it did not have the authority to ban bump-stocks under the Gun Control Act or the National Firearms Act because it's an accessory, not a gun.

The same would be true today under Trump even if the regime wanted to ban the devices, which they don't. The ATF released a statement earlier this week restating the conclusions reached by the agency in 2010.

Our Republican-controlled Congress has the power to ban bump-stocks, but it remains to be seen if they will actually do that or simply sit there and blame President Obama for everything until the end of time.

I suppose they could ban the stocks and blame Obama. These aren't mutually exclusive outcomes.
