Officials Launch Two Additional Investigations of Paul Manafort

Written by SK Ashby

In addition to the Justice Department and FBI investigation of Trump's former campaign manager, Paul Manafort, two additional investigations have been opened in the state of New York.

Sources who spoke to Bloomberg confirmed that the state attorney general and the local district attorney in Manhattan are investigating Manafort.

The probe by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, one of the most outspoken critics of the president, is in a preliminary stage, according to a person familiar with the matter who asked not to be named because the investigation isn’t public. [...]

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. is also in the early stages of an investigation into Manafort’s transactions, a person familiar with that probe said. Representatives for Schneiderman and Vance declined to comment.

We first learned that federal authorities were investigating Manafort's finances back in March when his secret bank accounts in Cyprus were revealed. It's not clear if the local and state investigations are related to that, but it seems likely given that he owns property in New York and lives in Trump Tower.

There's no doubt in my mind that a river of dirty money has flowed through Manafort, possibly even to Trump's 2016 campaign. Manafort's web of connections to shady despots and Putin-adjacent oligarchs is the stuff conspiracy theories are made of, but this may not be just a theory.

I wouldn't be surprised if we learned tomorrow that Manafort has buried bodies in the woods.
