Planned Parenthood Critic Ben Carson Used Fetal Brain Tissue

Written by SK Ashby

The esteemed doctor Ben Carson appeared on Fox News last month and decried the use of fetal tissue from abortions for research, saying that, at 17-weeks of age, a fetus has a "little nose and little fingers and hands."

That is exactly what Doctor Carson did in 1992, however, when Carson performed research on fetal brain tissue.

Late on Wednesday, an OB/GYN and science writer Jen Gunter revealed on her blog a 1992 study in which Carson and three other colleagues used tissue from the fetal brain and nasal cavity to better understand the development of the chambers (or “ventricles”) of the brain. These tissues “were obtained from two fetuses aborted at the ninth and and 17th week of gestation,” the paper says.

The Carson campaign has acknowledged the study and confirmed its content, but offered a nonsense response and justification for the doctor's hypocrisy.

"This has everything to do with how it’s acquired. If you’re killing babies and taking the tissue, that’s a very different thing than taking a dead specimen and keeping a record of it."

Doctor Ben Carson performed research using tissue from aborted fetuses "specimens."

That is somehow different than... performing research using tissue from... aborted fetuses.

Ben Carson still favors defunding Planned Parenthood, but the statement issued by his campaign today implies that he believes there is some value in conducting research on fetal tissue.

If Republicans don't want to defund Planned Parenthood for facilitating research, why do they want to defund the organization?

Taxpayers dollars are not used to pay for abortions. That's already illegal.
