Pope Francis Hates Fake News as Much as You Do

Or maybe more.

Speaking to a Catholic weekly magazine yesterday, Pope Francis criticized fake news and compared it to literally eating shit.

According to Francis, people responsible for creating fake news are aroused by shit, and those who consume fake news enjoy eating shit.

Using precise psychological terms, he said scandal-mongering media risked falling prey to coprophilia, or arousal from excrement, and consumers of these media risked coprophagia, or eating excrement. [...]

"The means of communication have their own temptations, they can be tempted by slander, and therefore used to slander people, to smear them, this above all in the world of politics," he said. "They can be used as means of defamation..."

"No-one has a right to do this. It is a sin and it is hurtful," he said.

He described disinformation as the greatest harm the media can do because "it directs opinion in only one direction and omits the other part of the truth," he said.

I think we've already crossed the threshold into this territory.

I’ve always thought so. It is a violation of one of the Ten Commandments after all.
Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy brother. Or sister, as it were.
Amazing how all of these Christians over look that.

Well I heard that he endorsed Trump, so I’m not sure we should be listening to him 😛

      • Scopedog

Say what? Where did you hear that from?

No, he did not endorse Trump. In fact, he criticized Trump many times, including Trump’s plan to build the wall.

        • Dread_Pirate_Mathius

I was referencing the fake story about the pope endorsement that was shared on Facebook more than a million times by gullible idiots.

          • Scopedog

Ahhh…if that’s the case, then I stand corrected and apologies most unreservably.

(And at least I’m not hanging out the window being held by my feet like John Cleese in A Fish Called Wanda)

Well, I would not doubt that gullible idiots on FB would believe that fake story–take one look at how many of them believe the fake story about “PIzzagate”.

Besides, Pope Francis is already hated by a good chunk of the GOP. Of course, he has more morality in his pinkie than all of them have in their entire bodies.

When the Tertio interview is brought to his attention, will Donald Trump go on a Twitter rampage against Pope Francis? If he does, I don’t think he’ll like the result.

I hope he does, that will show the Christian right where they stand.

      • ninjaf

Catholics are not Christians according to the Christian right.

        • Georgie

          Well, this just getting confusing.

      • Christopher Foxx

Where the Christian Right stands isn’t already obvious? It certainly hasn’t been with Christ for ages.

  • The right has been shoveling shit for decades now and far too many Americans eat it like ice cream.

Not too long ago Bob had tweeted about having a Fact Summit. Essentially what this amounts to is websites meeting certain journalistic standards for News and Editorials so they can be considered trusted sources that aren’t trafficking in bullshit. Sure they can offer an opinion but those opinions are rooted in facts.
With the emergence of fake news running rampant on social media I do believe this is an important “seal of approval” that must be pursued.

    • Like a Better Business Bureau seal for journalism….that might work.

      • Badgerite

I think Fixed ‘news’ would howl like crazy as they are not really fact based most of the time.

I like the idea, but the devil, as the saying goes, is in the details.
