Reminder: Congressional Republicans Love Gitmo, Want to Keep it Open

Gitmo

As recently as last month Congress voted, once again, to prohibit the president from closing the prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

During the early days of the Obama administration opposition to closing Gitmo came from both parties in Congress, but in recent years opposition to closure has come primarily from congressional Republicans.

Congressional Republicans are so adamant that the prison remain open that they’re threatening to impeach the president if he releases more prisoners.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) warned Wednesday that Republican lawmakers would call for President Obama’s impeachment if he released more prisoners from Guantanamo Bay without congressional approval. [...]

“It’s going to be impossible for them to flow prisoners out of Gitmo now without a huge backlash,” Graham said. “There will be people on our side calling for his impeachment if he did that.”

Accusing the president of breaking the law for releasing detainees from a prison where they languish forever without charge or trial is a monument to irony.
