Report: FBI Suspects Trump Associates Coordinated With Russian Hackers

FBI Director James Comey confirmed that his agency is investigating possible coordination between the Trump campaign and Russian operatives during his Senate testimony, and now we have a little more detail about the investigation.

Officials who spoke to CNN say the FBI is investigating close associates of Trump and they appear to have gathered an expansive range of evidence.

The FBI is now reviewing that information, which includes human intelligence, travel, business and phone records and accounts of in-person meetings, according to those U.S. officials. The information is raising the suspicions of FBI counterintelligence investigators that the coordination may have taken place, though officials cautioned that the information was not conclusive and that the investigation is ongoing. [...]

One law enforcement official said the information in hand suggests "people connected to the campaign were in contact and it appeared they were giving the thumbs up to release information when it was ready."

Close associates of Trump who we know have well-documented ties to Russia include his longtime henchman Roger Stone, his former campaign manager Paul Manafort, his former national security adviser Michael Flynn, his lawyer Michael Cohen, and his former adviser Carter Page. And I'm probably leaving someone out because that's how many people close to him have been implicated.

Trump himself may not ultimately go down for this, but his agenda might. We can already see signs that Trump has very little political capital in the tank because, if he weren't so unpopular, his efforts to coax congressmen into supporting Trumpcare would be more fruitful.

Seeing Roger Stone and company get perp-walked would do my old heart good. However …

Even if the FBI makes arrests, the decision of whether to prosecute will be up to Attorney General Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III, and I don’t see him having the integrity to do so. And even if there’s a special prosecutor appointed, Trump voters will believe that the whole thing is a groundless witch-hunt dreamt up by the Ds, because that’s what the talking heads on FNC tell them.

As I’ve said before, as long as Donald Trump can and will sign whatever bills the Rs send him, they’ll keep him around. His agenda, whatever the hell that might be, was never going to be enacted (except for the bits the Rs already like, such as tax cuts for the rich and benefits cuts for the poor, and more military spending), but that doesn’t really matter to him. Being a mere bill-signing figurehead will give him more time for tweeting nonsense and organizing the next of his Nuremberg Rallies.

So, we get to have the Weekend At Bernie’s Presidency because it will get their agenda passed? What patriots they are!

And there’s Jill Stein in that photo too…wonder if she got any help from Putin and company, since she spent her whole damn campaign bashing Hillary and claiming that Trump was better.

    • There is no doubt in my mind that Stein is mixed up in this. She just wasn’t as important asBirther the prize pig.

  • Here’s the sad thing. Say Trump is involved and gets impeached and thrown in jail. That would be awesome. But Pence becomes President. Even though Trump lost the popular vote and even though he won the electoral vote because of Comey and Russian interference, I believe the chain of succession still stands. We don’t get a do over.

    And that sucks.

Yep–unless Pence gets caught up in this mess and goes down too. Granted, that’ll leave us with…shudder…President Paul Ryan, so…

But on the other hand, if this crap hits the fan and stretches out way into 2018, then the chances are that the Democrats will take back both Houses of Congress and can thus be a check on either a President Pence or President Ryan. And if Trump is removed and then Pence right after the 2018 elections, then if a Democrat is House Speaker then, well, you get the idea.

Of course, right now we’ve got to take everything one day at a time. There’s still a lot of shit that has yet to hit the fan.

If Trump is destroyed by this the D’s should do everything in their power to wrap Trump around Pence’s neck. He chose to sign on to this. He chose to support and enable this nightmare every step of the way.

        • Badgerite

trump couldn’t have done it without active support from the GOP and Pence was one of his strongest supporters.

John Fugelsang has suggested going after Pence first. Trump would have to appoint someone to VP, but at least it wouldn’t be Pence. And then go after Trump. And then whatever VP is there won’t have any legitimacy as President because he has been appointed and not elected.

*shrugs* No matter what we do, it is a shit show.

      • Yep. The slate of replacements is bad all the way down.
