What was the point? Donald Trump got to look tough! and decisive! He dominated! the ratings. No other news story was important, just him and his tough! and decisive! domination! of the news cycle. He dropped the metals tariffs because the story was no longer in the first segment of the evening news; the sugar high had worn off. Now he's moved on to his next rush, tariffs against China. Those will last until they're no longer the lead story. This is the first administration that's not poll-driven, but ratings-driven. It's not an improvement. –alopecia

To be clear, this is good news because the tariffs were going to cost far more jobs than they could have created, but the Trump regime must look like bumbling, bluffing fools to most of the world including our closest allies and trading partners.

A base that is incapable of understanding what is happening to it can be fed right wing bull shit and will swallow it whole. Republican attacks on colleges and universities and “elites” can be more easily understood in the light of this thinking. Why should steel workers be able to understand how they are being used, manipulated and discarded. Of course they are only one group amongst many.
