Teacher Bashing in Idaho

Posted by JM Ashby

Good news everyone, the reign of tyranny carried-out by teachers, with their demands for such things as smaller class sizes and less papers to grade while off the clock, is finally coming to end! And we have the courageous Republican party to thank for stopping them.

(Reuters) - The Idaho state legislature approved a bill on Tuesday to strip public school teachers of many of their collective bargaining rights while protesters in five states rallied against Republican efforts to curb union power.

The Idaho bill, which excludes issues like class size and workloads from negotiations for the state's 12,000 unionized teachers, was given final approval by the Republican-led House and is expected to be signed by Republican Governor Butch Otter.

The bill also eliminates teacher tenure, limits the duration of teacher labor contracts to one year and removes seniority as a factor in determining the order of layoffs.

So teachers in Idaho can look forward to larger classes, larger workloads, zero possibility of tenure, maximum contracts of one-year, and even if you've been somewhere for decades you may be the first to be fired should another budget problem arise.

I had my fair share of terrible tenured teachers when I was a student, but I certainly wouldn't classify all of them as such. Wouldn't it be better to simply raise the standards to receive and maintain tenure rather than eliminating it entirely?

Idaho may soon have a hard time finding teachers that want to work there.
