Cartoon NSA

The Experts

In other news, the Senate passed the USA Freedom Act today which will head to the president's desk for his signature. There a lot of very misleading and confusing headlines out there today, so I'm going to try to make it a little more clear.

The NSA will still have access to the information it needs, but it will be stored by telecommunications companies and accessed by the agency. The agency will still be required to go through the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC) to obtain detailed records just as it did before.

More specifically, this concerns the collection of metadata (phone number, duration of call) of phone calls traced to other countries. This information will still be collected and stored.

If you trust corporations with virtually meaningless metadata that never contained detailed information about you, but not the federal government; congratulations.

There's a lot of hype over a lot of nothing, but that sums up virtually the entire debate since it began.
