The GOP Has No Platform

Written by SK Ashby

Not just rhetorically. The Republican party literally will not adopt a party platform at this year's GOP convention which begins today.

In a statement, the Republican National Convention says they won't adopt a platform because of the coronavirus pandemic, but the truth, which they also admit, is that their only real platform is whatever Trump makes up from one day to the next.

The RNC said if they had been able to meet, they “would have undoubtedly unanimously agreed to reassert the party’s strong support for President Donald Trump and his administration,” and resolved that “the Republican Party has and will continue to enthusiastically support the president’s America-first agenda” and “will adjourn without adopting a new platform until the 2024 Republican National Convention.”

Trump doesn't really have an agenda, per say, beyond what suits or benefits him from one day to the next.

To my knowledge, this is the first time the modern RNC has not adopted a platform. The GOP's platform typically includes all the things you would expect, such as lower taxes and social conservatism like opposition to gay marriage in the past. But the GOP under Trump doesn't believe in anything and isn't loyal to anything except Trumpism.

I suppose the Republican party doesn't necessarily need a platform since they have no intention of governing and their plans for the immediate future include nothing. They have no direction and their electoral strength is rooted in very little beyond white supremacy.

If the Democratic party ever resembles the Republican party in the future, united by nothing except their nihilism and the exclusion of minorities, that would be the day I'm no longer a Democrat.

The party platform adopted at the 2020 DNC is almost 100 pages long
