The Governor of Alabama is Being Impeached

Written by SK Ashby

The Alabama state legislature has officially begun the process of impeaching Governor Robert Bentley by holding their first hearing today but, according to AL dot com, Bentley is looking for an exit strategy.

Bentley is facing the possibility of being charged with multiple felonies and he's looking for a way out.

Sources in Montgomery say his lawyers have been involved in negotiations to step down from the governorship and plead to lesser charges, allowing Lt. Gov. Kay Ivey to step up as governor.

Sources believe he will resign the governorship by Wednesday.

In case you forgot, Bentley is accused of using his power and resources as governor to cover up an affair. You may have forgotten because these allegations first surfaced over a year ago.

And to be clear, state Republicans have called for Bentley's removal for his abuse of power and resources, not because he had an affair; that would be so 1998.

The results of an investigation of Bentley were just recently made public and, among other things, investigators have accused Bentley of using law enforcement officers to cover up his affair.

"Governor Bentley directed law enforcement to advance his personal interests and, in a process characterized by increasing obsession and paranoia, subjected career law enforcement officers to tasks intended to protect his reputation," says the report, released Friday.
