Election 2020

The Mission is Clear

Like many of you reading this, former Vice President Joe Biden was not my first choice in the 2020 Democratic presidential primary. Personally, my first choice was Senator Kamala Harris of California, but Joe Biden became the only viable choice once the field of candidates narrowed and dropped out one by one.

Senator Bernie Sanders dropped out of the race today by suspending his primary campaign. And while Joe Biden was already the mathematically-presumptive nominee, he definitely will be the Democratic nominee for president now.

(CNN) -- Sen. Bernie Sanders ended his presidential campaign on Wednesday, clearing Joe Biden's path to the Democratic nomination and a showdown with President Donald Trump in November.

Sanders made the announcement in a call with his campaign staff, his campaign said.

Sanders' exit caps a stunning reversal of fortune following a strong performance in the first three states that voted in February. The nomination appeared his for the taking until, on the last day of February, Biden surged to a blowout victory in South Carolina that set off a consolidation of moderate voters around the former vice president.

Now, the mission is clear: vote Donald fucking Trump out of office

I have to say I'm excited; excited because I can't wait to see President Obama hit the campaign trail and light into Trump like literally no one else is capable of. Biden himself is relatively good at poking the Orange Menace, but President Obama's presence will take pressure off Biden and allow him to take a mild tone while Obama lets loose.

Unfortunately, because of the ongoing pandemic, we don't know when it will be safe for the campaign to assemble large crowds but suffice to say I don't expect to see that until July or August at the earliest.

I personally still have some hope that I'll get to vote for Kamala Harris in November if Biden chooses her to be his running mate, but it's obviously not a deal breaker if he doesn't. Everyone needs to vote to get rid of Trump once and for all no matter what happens between now and November.

Get Trump out of office and his entire family empire will collapse. I'm sure of it.

The mission has been clear for over three years.

I can only hope that Sanders’ supporters will now do the right thing and work to support Biden, and thus throw Trump out of the White House. If the left wingers pull a Jimmy Dore, and thereby help Trump be re-elected, history will NEVER forgive them! Biden wasn’t my pick for the nomination (I was a supporter of Elizabeth Warren) but you can be damned sure I will do whatever is in my power to help elect Biden. America, nay civilization itself cannot survive another 4 years of Donald F***ing Trump. I don’t doubt that Trump would demand, not an inauguration, but a coronation. All hail our Dear Leader,Donald the First! No need for confetti, when there are plenty pf copies of the constitution that an be shredded. Despise Biden if you want, but if you DON’T help him oust Trump from the Oval Office, then you are a traitor to Democracy!

i’m already seeing the bernie cult saying they will not vote for biden. one of them is a friend of mine from high school (she intends to write in bernie’s name). they haven’t learned anything from 2016. dumbasses, every one of them. like a bunch of spoiled children who didn’t get their way. they’re throwing a tantrum and this is now a matter of life and death.

Oy indeed! If the die-hard Bernie supporters don’t swallow hard and support Biden, then they will have blood on their hands that will NEVER wash off!

Bernie Sanders has started making the right noises, saying he would support Joe Biden in the general. Good. He didn’t really show the same courtesy to Hillary Clinton four years ago.

Juan Cole is a bigger Sanders fan than I am, but he makes a reasonable point (as did Sanders himself): Sanders has an opportunity to influence the Ds’ platform. This is also good. Biden’s instinct is to find middle ground, not to push beyond what he thinks is possible. If Sanders can push the party—and Biden—to adopt some Left-of-Center planks, that could work to the Ds’ advantage.

As for Sanders’s die-hard supporters, they need to learn to take partial victories when they come along, and swallow hard and—yes—vote for someone they see as the lesser of two evils. Incremental change may be less fun than a revolution, but it’s far more likely to happen.

    • They’re hurting now. Hopefully they’ll come around.

Tough shit. It’s a petulant, whiny toddler hurt. They need to be slapped upside the head with their selfishness until they grow the fuck up.

    CRYSTAL CLEAR!

I agree 100%. If we do not, nothing else matters. No progressive or liberal policy will be enacted. Rights and regulations will continue to be rolled back. If we do not succeed, the trump crime family and their willing lackeys in the republican party and supreme court will complete the destruction of this country.

In principle, I’d rather have seen someone else—someone younger, someone newer to the national scene—as the D candidate.

However, I will vote for Joe Biden with a light heart, because he will be by far the better—and more competent—person to serve as President of the United States. Minor policy disagreements can wait for another time.

    Amen.

The mission IS clear. If Satan-in-Chief does not declare martial law, cancel the election and outlaw everyone from voting. In the past, I would say these are grandiose claims and unlikely to happen. But Trump and his Republican co-horts has consistently proven that there is no level to which they will not stoop, no precedent that they will not bulldoze, and no limit to the despicable actions that they can take to keep their bony withered hands on the levers of power.
