The Trump Regime Will Try to Imprison More Immigrant Children

Written by SK Ashby

The Washington Post first reported this morning that the Trump regime intends to withdraw from a decades-old legal settlement that prohibited the federal government from holding undocumented children in indefinite detention centers.

It's likely that the first federal court that hears a case on this will rule against the Trump regime, but I want to take a look at why they're doing this now.

This statement from Department of Homeland Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen makes it fairly clear that they believe this will be the silver bullet that accomplishes what their previous policies did not accomplish.

“Today, legal loopholes significantly hinder the Department’s ability to appropriately detain and promptly remove family units that have no legal basis to remain in the country,” said DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, in a statement. “This rule addresses one of the primary pull factors for illegal immigration and allows the federal government to enforce immigration laws as passed by Congress.”

The Trump regime's explicit goal of separating immigrant children from their parents was to deter anyone from coming here in the first place, but it didn't. Immigration increased over the summer even as the regime cracked down and locked up as many men, women, and children as they could in separate facilities.

Based on Secretary Nielsen's statement, we can infer that they believe holding more children in prisons will finally deter families from crossing the border.

They're wrong, because in many cases whatever happens to them here will still be better than dying. Imprisoning more children will not serve as a substantial deterrent. It will only torture and traumatize kids because white supremacists in the White House want to see it done.

The chance for children to live a full life is described here by Kirstjen Nielsen as a "pull factor."

I'm more "pro-life" than these motherfuckers and I believe in free access to abortion.
