In other news, Trump has reportedly chosen cantina alien Reince Priebus as his chief of staff. That's actually the good news.

Meanwhile, Trump has also chosen Breitbart chief Steve Bannon as his chief strategist. Bannon is an antisemitic white nationalist. That's the bad news.

Finally, journalist Gwen Ifill passed away today at the age of 61. Ifill was diagnosed with cancer last year.

Programming note... I thought I would be ready to get back to it today, but I'm not. I've been doing this for years with no significant breaks and this was the most grueling election cycle I've ever experienced. We're also less than a week removed from electing a white nationalist president, so I'm going to take another week to process that. The election of Trump is antithetical to virtually everything I believe in and what made me feel numb last week is beginning to make me feel very angry. I believe this is what they call a grieving process.

I expect to be writing daily again beginning next week.

I sympathize truly. This election was unlike anything we have experienced (and we have experienced some doozies). I am not sure many of us will ever get over it and the Orange Clown is not even in the White House yet.

  • Michael B. Conway

Why do people keep saying White Nationalist? The term used to be White Supremacist. Or Nazi.

  • Aynwrong

You’ve been here for us JM. We’ll be waiting for you. No rush. We can all relate.

  • MadJuana

I’m still reminding myself to just breathe several times a day. Take a break. We’ll be here when you get back.

  • I know it’s hard but try to just ignore the news for a few days. It helped me a bit to turn everything off this weekend.

    • ProudLiberalAlways

You know, late last week I thought your idea was was the way to go, and I did it. Then the other night I turned it on again, and when I heard how badly the transition was going AND that now Rump wants Frank Gaffney on his staff, I’m in a state of shock all over again!! I don’t know how much more of this I can take! No more respites!!!

  • Georgie

Thanks for all your hard work, put the feet up and knock back a few cold ones!

  • ninjaf

I am just coming out of numbness myself. Completely understandable.

  • gescove

Take the time, but please please please return.

  • No worries. It’s tough on all of us. Take what time you need. 🙂

  • KanaW

Take as much time as you need, JM, we’ll be waiting for you when you feel up to returning.
I’m still in the angry phase right now, just as I am still with Brexit. The entire western world has gone completely off its nut.

    • Dread_Pirate_Mathius

Take as much time as you need

      Fuck. That.

      Moping doesn’t help.

      We lost. Big. It sucks.

Time to put on our big boy pants and go back out there and FIGHT.

They’ve devoted enormous resources to making us liberals look like weak little pussies who need to run to their safe place every time someone doesn’t respect our special snowflake status. I, for one, choose not to feed into that.

      THEY are the cowards.

THEY are the ones who voted for someone who pandered to their basest instincts: nationalism, protectionism, fear of the ‘other,’ while we fought the good fight for everyone. Yes, we lost this round. What? Did you think life would be one big unbroken string of successes?

But they control all three branches of government and most of the states. And they are not going to hesitate to use that power to roll back the progress we have made over the last 8 years.

So, while we sit here whining about not being ready, they’re giddily making plans to gut health care, to eliminate abortion rights, to shove The Gays back into the closet, to persecute immigrants and Muslims. And, if you think they’re going to stop there, you might be surprised at the alarm bells going off in my Jewish head. If you think the 1% are running the show now, just you fucking wait.

So, no, I do not grant you my blessing to “take as much time as you need.” I cannot force you to write – you do not need my permission to mope. I cannot force you to get up off the floor and FIGHT. But if you don’t, you don’t get to hold your head high when they re-open Manzanar.

        1. A bit of an over-reaction to my comment.
        2. You seem to be in the minority here.
        3. Everyone heals at their own rate. Everyone will fight, once their heads are together and they can fight constructively. Yelling and screaming like a two-year-old (aka a Trumpista) isn’t going to help.

        • Dread_Pirate_Mathius

Maybe it is a bit of an over-reaction to your specific comment, and for that I apologize. My reaction is more tuned to the liberal reaction writ-large, not just you (or Bob & Chez) specifically. And if I seem mad (yelling and screaming), it is only because I AM mad. But more than mad at the right, I’m mad at the left. We are supposed to be better than this. How many times has this blog lamented that the Republicans act like children?

Everywhere I look, I see whining and moping. My feeds are full of this mauldin “whoa is me” crap. Facebook and blogs and people with safety-pins, teachers wondering what they’ll tell their poor students, and parents lamenting the plight of their daughters.

Wallowing in pity plays right into their hands. It reinforces everything they say about us. It gives them ammunition and confidence, and that means even more political power. While we’re sitting here “healing,” they’re out there gearing up – appointing white nationalists supremacists, and climate change deniers, and Rudy Fucking Giuliani.

I had employees tell me they need time off to heal. One told me she needed “at least” two weeks. Like hell.

I don’t care if I’m the minority here. At least I’m not curled up on the floor in the fetal position.

It’s a goddamn election. You can’t win them all, but we’re grown ups, and we should act like it.

          Yes, it sucks.

But the world is still turning. The sun is still shining. There’s still coffee in my cup.

We lost this round. Let’s go out and make damned sure we win the next one.

          • KanaW

            Apology accepted. Thank you.

However, I really don’t see anyone on this site ‘curled up in a foetal position’.
Yes, your employees are being silly. Yes, people are in shock.

But I also see the need to actually make a plan rather than simply sounding off.
*shrugs* Different way of looking at things.

*grin* If you want to yell, have at it!

          • mnpollio

Damn! Don’t apologize. That was beautiful and summed up my feeling exactly.

          • ninjaf

While it has taken me a while to get over the shock, I was not curled up in the fetal position. I still got up and went to work every day (WTF, people? It never occurred to me to take a day off from work for this.) But, I did get the wind taken out of my sails and it took me almost a week to get it back (finally feeling more normal today). But, even with no wind in my sails, I was still rowing — answering anyone on my normal haunts trying to normalize what we are seeing, railing against the ridiculousness of his transition team, etc.

From what I gather, the writing Ashby does here is a hobby, more or less. It doesn’t pay the bills, anyway. So, if he needs some time to get his heart back in it, then by all means, he should take it.
