Racism The Media

Totally Not Racist

Cohen1

By now you've probably heard the chorus of people calling for Richard Cohen to be fired for the column he wrote today for the Washington Post. I don't think this is actually the worst thing he's ever written. It's bad, but we're talking about a man who blamed the Steubenville rape case on Miley Cyrus and twerking and said that George Zimmerman "understandably" and justifiably profiled Trayvon Martin because he was black.

While it may not be the absolute worst thing he has ever said, this may be one of the most contradictory and confused paragraphs ever written.

Today's GOP isn't racist but they have to stop themselves from gagging when they look at the family of incoming New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, which is biracial. The de Blasio family doesn't look like "their country."

In reality, today's GOP is unequivocally racist and the de Blasio family looks more like their country than they want to admit. Otherwise they might gag, right?

And what about this part?

Cohen4

Should you mention it? I don't know, should you? You seem to think this also a gag-inducing revelation. If you don't, why did you mention it?

Lesbian! Ooga booga!

For what it's worth, Cohen may be right about Chris Christie's chances of success with the Lunatic Base of the Republican party, but he went about expressing that in the worst way possible. At best, he's cartoonishly out of touch. At worst, some of these views are actually his own. But I repeat myself.

Everything about Cohen's writing, past and present, screams "conventional views," and hand-waving racism by referring to it as "conventional views" tells me that you're sympathetic to those views.
