to “remove, by means of its choosing, any impediments arising from the measures on 8 May to the free exportation to the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran” of:

• medicines and medical devices

• foodstuffs and agricultural commodities

• spare parts, equipment and services necessary for the safety of civil aviation

In response, the Trump administration raged, stamped its feet, and took its ball and went home. Because that’s the way a global superpower acts, apparently.

I detect the cloven hoof of John Bolton in this, a man who hates the United Nations and desperately wants a war with Iran.

Whether this administration likes it or not, Iran is a sovereign nation that acts in its self-interest, not to mention it’s a regional superpower. Engagement is a much more sensible approach than unjustifiable sanctions and alienating allies.

But the Trump administration doesn’t do sensible. Alas.
