Trump Might Pay Iran to Comply With The Nuclear Deal He broke

Written by SK Ashby

Republicans had a conniption when the Obama administration agreed to return billions of Iran's own money that we seized from them decades ago as part of the 2015 nuclear deal, but Trump might pay Iran just to comply with the terms of that deal.

Trump unilaterally withdrew from the nuclear deal but he'd like to see Iran come back into compliance with it so the White House is reportedly considering a proposal to give them $15 billion and roll back sanctions on Iranian oil.

The deal put forward by France would compensate Iran for oil sales disrupted by American sanctions. A large portion of Iran’s economy relies on cash from oil sales. Most of that money is frozen in bank accounts across the globe. The $15 billion credit line would be guaranteed by Iranian oil. In exchange for the cash, Iran would have to come back into compliance with the nuclear accord it signed with the world’s major powers in 2015. Tehran would also have to agree not to threaten the security of the Persian Gulf or to impede maritime navigation in the area. Lastly, Tehran would have to commit to regional Middle East talks in the future. [...]

At the G7 meeting in Biarritz, France last month, Trump told reporters that Iran might need a “short-term letter of credit or loan” that could “get them over a very rough patch.”

You know, the Obama-era nuclear deal was a concrete, verifiable deal that included routine inspections and rigorous enforcement mechanisms. President Obama's deal and the Iranian campaign to sell it to their own citizens was based on the economic opportunity in front of them; the opportunity to establish trade with the west and eliminate the possibility of war.

Trump shit all over that when he unilaterally withdrew from the deal and imposed sanctions even though Iran had continued to comply with the terms of the deal.

Trump may not actually go through with this, but even if he tries to I wouldn't necessarily be surprised nor would I blame them if the Iranians tell him to eat shit. They don't have any reason to trust Trump.

In the future, foreign countries are going to insist on enforcement mechanisms to ensure the United States complies with the terms of our deals, not the other way around.
