The Oranga County (Virginia) Board of Supervisors.
The board voted 4-1 to allow a Walmart superstore to be built on the grounds near the Wilderness Battlefield. This region of Virginia is steeped in Civil War history and the Wilderness area was the location of two major battles including Chancellorsville in 1863.
The supervisors have defied preservation activists; they have defied Governor Kaine; they have defied lawmakers from as far away as Vermont and Texas; and they have spit in the face of history and the memories of the men who died in those forests and fields.
