In other news, Trump has reportedly approved a plan to provide heavy weapons to Syrian Kurds. I remember when the GOP (especially Rand Paul) hated this idea back when we had a black president.

Meanwhile, a group of Democratic senators are calling for an SEC investigation of Carl Icahn for possible insider trading and market manipulation.

Icahn became an unpaid adviser to Trump on regulation shortly after November's presidential election. In February Icahn proposed a change to the U.S. biofuels program that would ease the regulatory burden on oil refining companies - including CVR Energy Inc, in which he owns a majority stake. [...]

RIN prices dropped sharply after Icahn’s proposal on the biofuels regulation was reported, the senators pointed out in their letter.

“We have no way of knowing at this time whether Mr. Icahn made any of his renewable fuel credit trades or decisions about trades based on material, non-public information or otherwise manipulated the market,” the senators wrote.

Finally, a state of emergency has been declared at a former nuclear production site in Hanford, Washington where a tunnel containing radioactive material has collapsed. Who trusts Rick Perry to clean this up?

I got woken up three hours early today by a stupid car alarm. I've been muttering a series of barely audible sounds and grunts all day like Winthorpe at the Christmas party.

Update...

This happened. Everything is fucked.

So we’re meant to believe the Rs, from Donald Trump downward, are concerned that James Comey treated Hillary Clinton badly.

Pull the other one, it’s got bells on.

You have to love the fact that they are trying to sell their “concern” over Comey’s unfair handling of Hillary Clinton as the reason for his dismissal. They had no concern for months, until the whole Russia investigation started revving up and now they have dismissed the head of the investigation because of belated concern over his bad handling of Mrs. Clinton!? Ummm, right. Anyone who believes that there is nothing of substance to the claims of collusion between Trump and the Russians needs to explain coherently why Trump and his acolytes have repeatedly lied all along about their contacts with the Russians and then lied repeatedly and in contradictory fashion to bolster the earlier lies, and explain further why he appears to be trying to actively undermine the investigation at every turn if there is “nothing to see”. I thought Comey was a joke after the Clinton affair, but it kills me to think what Trump cheerleader/partisan hack will be appointed to make this all go away for Donnie Little-hands. Chris Christie, come on down!

You also have to love the fact that, as Kevin Drum pointed out this morning, “many of Trump’s advisors are perfectly willing to portray him as an idiot” by talking to reporters and contradicting the official—and literally unbelievable—White House narrative.

It remains to be seen how long it takes Rs in both chambers of Congress to cut Donald Trump (and, not coincidentally, Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III) loose and support the appointment of a special prosecutor.

This story is going to get a lot messier as time goes on.

It remains to be seen how long it takes Rs to take a stand up for actual principles and put country over party? We know how long it will take. Eternity.

          • muselet

You’re right, Rs putting country before party won’t happen.

However, Rs putting their reelection chances ahead of the interests of Donald Trump and Jeff Sessions could happen if the Russia connection gets too much more difficult to explain. Rats, sinking ship, that sort of thing.

If the fate of the country weren’t at stake, this might be fun to watch.

We’ll survive. It won’t be pretty, but we got through 1972-74. And this is just turning into a repeat of that.

I just saw the Comey headline on MSNBC. I’m not surprised but I was shocked. This also leaves me genuinely disconcerted. This screams cover up. Unless a special prosecutor is appointed it all comes down to Nov 8, 2018. Democrats must retake Congress and can launch an investigation that Trump can not interfere with. Any voter who votes for a Republican in the midterms is betraying their country whether they know it or not.

I have an image in my head of the Hindenburg on fire. Can’t decide if it symbolizes Trump’s coming downfall or the fall of America. Maybe its just my head exploding.

Rumor has it that David Duke is a shoo-in for FBI.

    • I’m thinking Himmler has a good chance. Trump’s had his eye on him for some time.
