The Birther Primary

The new PPP poll digs into the Republican primary voters:

Birthers make a majority among those voters who say they're likely to participate in a Republican primary next year. 51% say they don't think Barack Obama was born in the United States to just 28% who firmly believe that he was and 21% who are unsure.

Get used to this line: "Obama is a Christian because he says he is." It leaves a huge opening for wingnuts to nod in agreement -- "And I bet he's lying. Of course he says he's not a Muslim. Who would admit to that?!"

And get ready for an encore of this qualifier: "He's not a Muslim... as far as I know."

Oh, and, just like John Boehner did on Meet the Press the other day, the Republican field will randomly bring it up, often out of context. It's a way to suggest the idea without explicitly endorsing it.
