CBO: Defunding Planned Parenthood Would Cost More Than it Saves

Written by SK Ashby

This isn't surprising given what's at stake, but the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) make it's clear -- defunding Planned Parenthood isn't free.

The CBO, Congress’s nonpartisan scorekeeper, projects that defunding Planned Parenthood would actually end up increasing government spending because it would result in more unplanned births as women lost access to services like contraception. Medicaid would have to pay for some of those births, and some of the children themselves would then end up qualifying for Medicaid and other government programs.

The CBO projects that defunding Planned Parenthood would cut spending by $520 million over ten years, but the consequences of cutting off funding would increase spending by $650 million.

Of course, under their ideal conditions, Republicans would ban all abortions and obliterate Medicaid by repealing the Obamacare expansion and converting it into a block-grant system.

If they had their way, Republicans would return American women and children to the fucking dark ages. Maybe the poor, sick children can sweep the floor of New Gingrich's workhouse.
