CEO and Utah Gubernatorial Candidate is Also a Doomsday Prepper

Written by SK Ashby

Jonathan Johnson, the CEO of Overstock dot com, is running for governor of Utah in part because he believes the state must prepare for the coming apocalypse.

Johnson has overseen the stockpiling of gold and non-perishable food at Overstock in preparation for the coming financial collapse of the United States and he strongly believes the state of Utah should do the same.

Under Jonathan Johnson's leadership at Overstock.com, the company has socked away $10.9 million in gold and silver and has a three-month food supply for each employee, bracing for a financial crisis that the Republican gubernatorial candidate said is certain to come. [...]

Johnson said the company also has enough freeze-dried food — the product sold on the Overstock website — that the company could feed all of its employees and spouses for three months. [...]

"This is particularly important because of our unhealthy reliance on Washington, D.C., to meet our annual budget," Johnson said in a statement.

I can think of several ways the state of Utah could lessen its dependence on federal funding, such as increasing the minimum wage and/or raising taxes on the rich, but I'm skeptical that these policies are what Johnson has in mind.

If we experienced the kind of catastrophe Johnson envisions, I can't imagine very many people would immediately flock to Overstock.com for the End of the World Sale. In a situation where Overstock employees depend on the company for food, I think it's safe to say everything will have gone to shit.

I suppose the marauding hordes will know where to strike first when they're short on supplies.
