RELM_buttonSanta Rosa Fires: Not Safe For Work; Podcasting from the evacuation zone near the catastrophic Santa Rosa, CA firestorm. I recorded the show in my car, parked at the intersection of Piner Rd and Coffey Ln, a few blocks from the devastation shown in the attached photo. (The audio and show format are different due to recording on an iPhone without all of our usual fun noises, etc.) Brought to you by Bubble Genius, Harry's Razors, Blue Apron, the BobCesca.com Amazon Link and The Bowen Law Group.

Sorry for the horror..I can’t imagine. It’s bad enough in Salt Lake when we get the smoke in the valley in the summer from various sources, I can’t imagine the stench and pervasiveness of the smoke and char. I hope some thought will go into the species of trees people will plant, maybe neighborhoods can get together and figure out a plan with the help of agricultural extension services and universities etc. Hope your hot water and electric come back soon!

So, I always thought you guys lived in SF. Little did I know y’all are in SR. We are sitting here in smokey West Sonoma county, close to Graton. Very early Monday morning I got a call from my sister-in-law in Penngrove re the firestorm. Terror ensued. While we were far enough away from the chaos going on in SR, we took in friends and their 1 yr old boy, their dog and finally two cats from the evacuated area between Guernville and Piner. They got to go home Wednesday, sans gas but their power came back on. I hope yours is back on too. We have friends who lost everything. My dog’s breeder in Kenwood lost 12 Bernese Mtn. dogs and barely escaped with her life. My nephew had to rescue his sister from her apt. on River Rd & Fulton because she slept through the evacuation alarm. There are far too many dreadful tales to tell here. I’ve been trying to figure out how we would bug out with 3 large dogs and 7 chickens and where we would go. Anyway, I’ve been a listener since you started coming on Steph’s show. I should probably, in solidarity, go to your Patrion page and sign up. We’ll get through this.

  • Ironic though it may be, this was a good show. Particularly the way you highlight the difficulties a person goes through in such situations and how that affects you. This is the new reality that Climate Change and the failure of our government to really act has forced upon far too many people.

Looks like a bomb went off there. My heart goes out to those who have lost their lives and homes. I was looking at a map of the fire and finally put 2 and 2 together, and realized that I’d been to the Santa Rosa area before. Our favorite winery, V. Sattui in St. Helena, is just a few miles from there and was still standing a couple of days ago but so many others have been completely destroyed. Obviously this is all devastating to the families there but the destruction of wineries and businesses, some that have been there for a very long time (V. Sattui was started in 1885), will have some long term economic impacts as well.

I hope the fires die down and you both stay safe.

  • Fake lord have mercy, son. I’ve seen some shit, but nothing like what’s going on out there.
Hope it works out OK for you.

Damn man…reporting from the destruction. That’s admirable. I know on-site reporters do that and it can’t be easy but after they’re done they usually get to go home. That picture you posted for this episode looks like those old timey World War 1 photos you see from the front. Also, bravo to you to buying the first responders some coffee…it may well have been the best thing to happen to them all day.
