Who’s that babe in the pic?

    • Ziggy Blue

      Transgender Trump.

  • I think people who called themselves Liberal/Progressive and Bernie supporters who then voted for Trump were people who look to the personality of the candidate more than the actual issues. So there is an argument to be made that folks like that aren’t true Liberals/Progressives because they’re willing to throw those principles out the window due to “personality” issues. Is this a pointless argument at this point? Maybe. But the thing we MUST learn from this is–the Bernie voters who voted for Trump and the Stein/Putin lovers are unreachable and a waste of time.

Sometimes I think how awesome it must be to be Trump because his entire world is made up to suit himself. Then other times I think that he must be the most miserable person who ever lived because other people push back against his delusions constantly (as they should). It must take tremendous psychological energy to fight to maintain that delusion.

The transgender ban has me infuriated. All of the rising hate against LGBTQ has me extremely worried about my daughter’s future safety. I never thought I would worry about my own country hurting my children. And this must be what POC feel all the time and it makes me very aware of my white hetero privilege.

If we’re waiting for GOP support to fall to a low enough number before impeachment, I have no confidence it will ever happen because all they care about is the fact that he says the things they want him to–as Bob said, he’s their proxy and as long as he continues to do that, they’re A-OK.

The Pee Pee Tape Zombie!!!! Thank goodness it still lives! If it’s proof of collusion, what the hell do we do with that? If they won’t impeach him, there will still be the idea among a significant portion of the US populace that they stole the election and our confidence in the entire system will be destroyed. We have no precedence for such a thing. Do we do the election over? WTF do we do? Goddamn Putin. No matter what happens, Putin succeeded.

    • Ziggy Blue

I hear you. I mean, transgender soldiers and transgender bathrooms? Who the FUCK cares about these issues. They’re NON-ISSUES looking for a solution. Trans-people are NOT a FUCKING problem. Honestly, outside of the religious right, who thinks this shit is worth talking about? The Evil Clown Dictator has us coddling Nazis and taunting N. Korea and TRANSGENDER people are the PROBLEM? I mean, ferfucksakes. I think I’m taking CRAZY PILLS. GODAMNIT!

There is no defending Sanders as he trashed Hillary using some of the same right wing points, and far longer than he should have. I still believe that between him and Comey, and the digital misinformation campaign lies the greatest responsibility for the Dems loss. Given all these things, I still feel that the average American seeing the debates between Rump and Hillary, there was no contest..it should have been Hillary by a giant landslide. No excuses. And the non voters? Shameful.

Has it really only been two hundred and some days of Rump?? Seems like a million…

    • ProudLiberalAlways

This Fool’s reign is just plain exhausting!! I’m hoping he’s impeached soon—-I don’t think I can survive 4 years (let alone 8) of our Idiot-in-Chief!

      • Victor the Crab

If that should happen, then be prepared for President Mike Pence, who could be much worse on many levels than Drumph.

  • Draxiar

That new Lucky Charms marshmallow would make them magically delicious! *snarf*

  • Michael B. Conway

Trump has become Floyd the Barber.

  • muselet

Bob, I can imagine a D president doing that. I can also imagine the articles of impeachment being filed the next morning.

Polling more than a year out from an election is just an elaborate way of generating random numbers. Wake me in ten or twelve months.

“Half the country didn’t vote.” True, but Australia has mandatory voting and they’ve wound up with charmless nonentities like Tony Abbott and Malcolm Turnbull as Prime Minister. The Wisdom of Crowds doesn’t seem to apply to politics.

Gavin Newsom is a bright politican (I know, that’s a low bar). If the Ds want to win elections, they should listen to him and others like him. The endless bickering among the various factions needs to stop, the party needs to look forward and figure out how to win elections against a party that will cheerfully bend the rules to gain and remain in power.

During an election (all the time, to be clear, but especially during an election), we need to be on guard for confirmation bias: finding and favoring information that confirms one’s existing beliefs. Lots of people went into the 2016 election dead certain Hillary Clinton was dishonest or a conservative warmonger or insufficiently bloodthirsty toward the financial sector or her emails! or otherwise unfit to be president, and had those preconceived notions reinforced by Donald Trump, Jill Stein, Bernie Sanders, the various Lefty Purity Brigades, a large chunk of the internet and, yes, the New York bleedin’ Times (still institutionally pissed off that it got the Whitewater story utterly, cosmically wrong and determined to torpedo a Clinton, any Clinton, to avenge its humiliation). Once more, I mount my soapbox and argue vehemently for more and better science education; there’s nothing quite like it to teach critical thinking and the evaluation of evidence (and now I dismount my soapbox before I fall off and hurt myself).

Favorable views of Vladimir Putin and Russia are easy to find on the Left. Truthdig, to give but one tiresome example, is fond of shouting about neo-McCarthyism! and Red-baiting! whenever there’s mainstream reporting on Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

Bob, TV pundits never learn. Whatever happens, it’s always the first time it’s ever happened in the history of the world. They remind me of this, from So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish:

From another direction he felt the sensation of being a sheep startled by a flying saucer, but it was virtually indistinguishable from the feeling of being a sheep startled by anything else it ever encountered, for they were creatures who learned very little on their journey through life, and would be startled to see the sun rising in the morning, and astonished by all the green stuff in the fields.

On Tuesday, The Baffler published “The President of Blank Sucking Nullity,” an article by David Roth which does a decent job of explaining Donald Trump and his relationship to truth (and normal human emotions). For example:

The most significant thing to know about Donald Trump’s politics or process, his beliefs or his calculations, is that he is an asshole; the only salient factor in any decision he makes is that he absolutely does not care about the interests of the parties involved except as they reflect upon him. Start with this, and you already know a lot.

We’ll see if the White House sends that memo to the DOD. They’re not big on follow-through, after all, and holding it in reserve to distract the very dishonest fake news media! from new revelations about the Trump/Russia story is probably of more use politically than actually implementing a horrific, deliberately discriminatory policy. Sure, the inevitable lawsuits would let Trump wail about liberal activist judges!, but that line has a shelf-life of one news cycle or less.

It makes me cringe to type this, but, compared to Donald Trump, Mitch McConnell is serious, sensible and rational. He’s not actually any of those things, but nearly everyone looks better when compared to Trump.

Of course congressional Rs know Trump is obstructing justice, but they won’t do either diddly or squat about it because Trump has that magical eighteenth letter after his name. It will take the prospect of losing their seats to get them to consider acting.

Donald Trump has been sniping at Jeff Flake for some time now, and Flake is returning fire. Musing on the possibility of a primary challenge to Trump is Flake sending a shot across Trump’s bow (a tactic which might actually be effective if Trump were a normal polotician).

Personally, I’d prefer the transcripts of Glenn Simpson’s testimony remain out of the public eye, but I’m old enough to remember Lawrence Walsh’s investigation of Iran-Contra and how Congress (deliberately?) undercut him with very public hearings. Prosecution and conviction are more important, IMO (and collusion is more important than Trump’s possible interest in watersports *shudder*).

Newt Gingrich is a boob. He’s always been a boob and he’ll always be a boob.

Bob, I’ll take slight exception to one of your complaints about Gingrich. Alternate history is a legitimate genre of fiction, including gaming out what the world would look like had the Confederacy won the Civil War or had the Axis won World War II. That said, for Gingrich to write such alternate histories is hard to take.

  • Chris Kawala

Love the show. Bob can you post a link to the Jill Stein South/Putin supporters pole?

  • Ceoltoir

Trump voters ONLY supported Sanders because they knew he is a general election disaster. Trashing the Democratic Party because the Press wont cover them is stupid, STOP.

  • Chris Budesa

do not forget about the 44% of eligible voters who did not vote.

  • ProudLiberalAlways

This whole Trans members of the military issue is such a fraud!! Not for them, of course, Rump is doing it (he says) to save money! One fucking weekend staying in the WH for him would cover the cost for all 15,000 Trans soldiers. Put down the goddamned golf clubs for 1 friggin weekend, (no, you don’t have a “winter WH”), and the cost for them will not be an issue. Bob’s right—–this is another solution looking for a problem. Besides, according to the Generals, we cannot afford to cut our all volunteer military force by 15,000 as he “surges” troop numbers in Afghanistan. MORON!!!

  • Ziggy Blue

Raw Story is fun. But, check the sources, as Kimberly said. Even Raw Story gets some things wrong.

  • ProudLiberalAlways

Kimberley is right——we need to go and get the people who do not vote——–screw the conversion crap! If you mostly go for converts, you’re going to be sadly disappointed when all is said and done. Much more important to convince more people to vote regularly. And don’t feel bad, Kimberley, many people were manipulated.

    • Scopedog

Agreed. It does seem that many who did not vote last year are realizing just how wrong they were, and are now getting interested in voting and registering to vote.

To hell with the converts and the Jill Stein voters. The latter were howling about how Hillary would be so, SO fucking horrible, worse than Trump–and of course they have been proven dead wrong, and yet they don’t even have the guts to stand up and admit it. Fuck ’em.

  • ProudLiberalAlways

To illustrate the problem with gerrymandering———last(?) week in Mother Jones, there is a great piece on gerrymandering in Texas——they had (for instance) population growth enough to warrant 4 new congressional districts, ALL of them minorities (primarily Latino) and they drew the new districts so that 3 of them are snow white and the 4th is something like 2% minority voters. It’s a wonderful article, the Mother Jones with Rump flying off the page and a boot on the other side—-Headline– Wanna Boot Trump? Great read! Had all the numbers.

  • debish

loving the earlier start times this week!

    • Thanks! I always *try* to start early, but since I’ve been revamping my audio setup, we’ve had some technical delays. Oh — and the ceaseless Trump news has pushed us behind recently.
