The Energy Secretary is Unaware of Other Forms of Energy

Energy Secretary Rick Perry spoke at an energy conference in Houston this morning where he decried European nations and others that are making moves to eliminate fossil fuels from their economies over the next decade.

Perry just can't imagine going back to a world without electricity.

At the annual CERAWeek energy conference in Houston, Texas on Wednesday, reporter Lisa Friedman asked Energy Secretary Rick Perry about certain countries’ plans to stop using coal. Mocking the decision, Perry responded, “I think it’s a fool’s errand to stand up and say ‘by 2030 we’re going to be done with fossil fuels’ … and what? Go back to living like we were living in the mid-1800s?

The good news is no one is proposing that.

I hesitate to snark because this reveals a truly stunning level of ignorance about his own country, not just others. Significant portions of America are powered by gas, wind, solar, nuclear, and hydroelectric power.

America could also dump fossil fuels by 2030 if we had the political will in Congress to do so.

Coal is a finite resource. It took eons to make coal. Once it is mined out, do we go back to living like “in the 1800s”?
I think not. The urgency to a switch over to a new and better source of energy production is the health and polluting effects of coal and the the global warming and climate change those polluting effects are bringing about. But the necessity of developing new more sustainable methods of energy creation is also based on the fact that fossil fuels, coal are a finite resource. They will run out. Why wait to look for and develop and invest in new energy until it is a national emergency? That makes no sense. But then, it’s Rick Perry we are talking about. Like the transcontinental railroad, the government needs to be involved in helping to enable this change over. And because of the polluting and the health effects, the sooner the better. We are fouling our own environment. The one we breathe and rely on to live.

He should have stuck with Dancing with the Stars. He was far better at that than he is at his current office.
